Diversity in Early Social Experiences: How Social Network Size Shapes Cognitive and Social-Cognitive Abilities in Children
Beschreibung: Children learn from their environment by interacting with it. The bigger the diversity in their experiences, the more diverse and flexible the skills they acquire. This bachelor project will investigate how the size of children's social networks, as a source of this diversity, relates to the development of their social-cognitive abilities (e.g., perspective-taking, theory of mind, and peer relations) and their broader cognitive development (e.g., language, memory and executive functions). The goal of the project is to produce a comprehensive overview of existing research, with a particular focus on the methods used to assess social network size and how these networks are related to social and cognitive development in early childhood.

Status: offen (erfasst / geändert: 02.07.2026)Measuring Children's Language "in the Wild"
Beschreibung: Research on children's language development has traditionally relied on laboratory-based methods: structured tasks, controlled environments, and standardized parental questionnaire. While these approaches allow precise measurement, they often capture only a small part of how children actually use and learn language in everyday life.
In recent years, developmental science has increasingly shifted toward studying children "in the wild" (i.e., in naturalistic, real-world environments such as homes, playgrounds, preschools, and family interactions). This broader topic explores how children acquire language through daily experiences and how researchers can measure these processes reliably outside the lab.
Within this thesis, you will develop your own specific research question, for example focusing on methods, technology, comparisons between lab and natural settings, or evaluating the strengths and limitations of ecological methods. The goal is to conduct a literature review, identify consistent findings and open debates, and discuss implications for theories of language acquisition and future research directions.
The thesis can be written in English or in German.

Status: offen (erfasst / geändert: 02.07.2026)The differences in mutual exclusivity bias between monolingual and multilingual children
Beschreibung: How do children learn thousands of words even before they go to school? How do they know which word refers to which object? One strategy they use is called mutual exclusivity (ME). ME (also referred to in the literature as "fast mapping") refers to the bias listeners show when they assume that a novel label refers to a novel object, rather than an object for which the label is already known. Mutual exclusivity bias is present in infants, preschool children and adults. However, ME relies on the assumption that there is a one-to-one correspondence between the labels and the referents (e.g., "apple" refers only to an apple, and an apple only has one label to refer to it). This assumption is violated in multilingual children's environments, where objects have multiple labels (e.g., "apple" and "apfel" for an apple for a child growing up English/German bilingual). The aim of this thesis is to write a literature review on the differences in development of mutual exclusivity bias in early childhood between monolingual and multilingual children, and how these arise. This work has to be written in English.

Status: offen (erfasst / geändert: 02.07.2026)Mutual Exclusivity in Early Childhood: How Children Match Words to Objects
Beschreibung: Have you ever wondered how young children manage to learn thousands of words so quickly? One powerful strategy they use is called mutual exclusivity, which is a bias that each object has only one name. When a child who knows the word "cup" hears an unfamiliar word like "blicket", they assume it must refer to the unfamiliar object in the room, not the cup they already know. This bias helps children rapidly map new words with new objects in their environment.
But what happens when a child grows up hearing two or more languages? In multilingual environments, the same object has multiple names, e.g., ?Hund? and ?dog? both refer to the same animal. Interestingly, research suggests that multilingual children rely on mutual exclusivity less than their monolingual peers, though findings across studies are mixed and not yet fully understood.
Thesis Objectives:
The bachelor student will begin by crafting a specific research question within the scope of this topic. They will then conduct a detailed literature review, synthesising research on the use of mutual exclusivity in monolinguals and multilinguals across infancy and early childhood. The student?s final analysis will answer their research question based on the literature review, providing insights into how and when mutual exclusivity is used across development and between monolinguals and multilinguals. The student will identify potential areas for future research.
